What is AEO?
AEO, answer engine optimization, is the work of getting your brand named and cited in the answers AI assistants write. When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini what to buy or who to hire, the assistant answers with a few names and a few sources. AEO is how you become one of them.
Why the definition matters
A search results page has ten links and a user who chooses. An answer has one voice and a reader who mostly takes it. There is no position two in a paragraph: you are in the answer, or a competitor is being recommended in your place, and nothing on your own analytics tells you which. That invisibility is why the discipline exists.
What the work actually is
Three layers, in the order they fail. First, being readable: assistants retrieve pages before they write, so their crawlers must be able to fetch and parse yours. Second, being quotable: a page that answers the buyer's question directly, in text a model can lift and attribute. Third, being present where answers already look: assistants lean on review sites, comparison articles and forums, and if those pages do not mention you, your own site can be perfect and the answer still names someone else.
The readable layer is testable in a minute with our free check, fifteen checks against your live domain, no account. The other two layers start with measurement, because you cannot fix a gap you have not seen.
How it is measured honestly
Assistants are sampled, not deterministic: the same question returns different answers on different days. So a serious measurement asks each question several times, across engines, every week, and reports how many answers each number rests on. In one real scan of ours, a brand was named in 18 of 63 answers on one engine and 0 of 63 on the other two; a single check would have called that brand either visible or invisible, and both would have been wrong. The weekly, sampled version of that measurement is what Aureo does, and the sample report shows it on a real brand.

Common questions
- What does AEO stand for?Answer engine optimization: the work of getting your brand named and cited in the answers that AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini write. Where SEO competes for a position in a list of links, AEO competes for a place inside one generated answer.
- What is AEO in marketing?A channel discipline, like SEO before it. Buyers ask assistants which product, agency or tool to pick, and the assistant recommends someone. AEO in marketing means knowing how often that someone is you, and doing the content and source work to raise it.
- Is AEO replacing SEO?No. It sits beside it and borrows its plumbing: assistants retrieve web pages before they write, so crawlability, structure and speed still matter. What changes is the surface you compete on and the evidence you need, because answers vary between runs and rankings do not.
- How is AEO measured?By asking the questions buyers ask, repeatedly, across engines, and counting who gets named and which sources get cited. The repetition is not optional: the same question returns different answers on different days, so a single check is an anecdote. Look for a sample size next to every number.
- Is AEO the same as GEO?In practice, yes. GEO, generative engine optimization, is the name a 2023 research paper used; AEO grew out of the older answer box vocabulary. Vendors pick one, the work is identical.
